Before the fight: preparation
- Grab the Chain Mail. A strongbox next to the "Cliff-Facing Tower" campsite holds Chain Mail armor — a small but free defense boost before the first fight.
- Unlock the camp in the arena. The tall building in the middle of the crater has a campsite (and armor) — activate it, and use the campsite to enhance your weapon if you've gathered materials.
- Open from above. From the camp, the Hair bridge lets you stand above Rangifer and open with a jump-down assassination for a large chunk of free damage.
- Spend your ranged ammo early. Rangifer is mostly melee — bow and crossbow shots are nearly free damage at range.
- Before the rematch: upgrade your weapon (the fight is longer) and buy Fire Arrows from Brad at the Cleanse Walker.
Attack patterns you must learn
- Antler/head sweep combo: its most common attack — parryable despite the size. Parrying builds the stagger bar and Koo's FP, and the lowered head after the swings is your punish window.
- Spore projectiles: fired from its back — dodge or parry them.
- Bull charge with rock sweep: it charges forward, ripping rocks from the ground with its antlers — block, parry, or dodge backward.
- Forelimb stomp (rematch onward): when it rears up on hind legs, get out of its frontal arc; the stomp erupts sharp roots in a small AOE. The recovery — head planted in the ground — is a big punish window.
- Red-glow frenzy (lair fight): a red glow signals four fast antler sweeps into a stomp — reported able to KO Emma from full health. Interrupt it with a binding attack from Koo, grapple away, or commit to evasion until it ends.
- Tree summon (lair fight): it slams its head after backing off and yelling, erupting trees marked by red circles. Mid-fight it can draw energy from summoned trees to heal — close the gap (grapple to it) and break the channel with a combo.
First encounter: Ogouchi Buffer Zone (Lv 9)
You meet Rangifer in a crater during the Prowling Nushi quest, after speaking to the Foreman in Subcity 01. It's level 9 — level 6–7 or higher is a fair fight; farm nearby enemies if it's going badly. Play patient: learn the sweep timings, parry to build stagger, punish the head, and keep Koo's Higanbana: Seeds on cooldown to stack Burn. Elevation and self-made grapple points blunt most of its downward-hitting kit.
Lair rematch: two phases (Lv 12)
Past Subcity 03 you corner Rangifer in its sealed lair — now level 12 (level 10+ recommended), with a second health bar and a second phase. Everything from the first fight still applies, plus the stomp, the red-glow frenzy and the tree summons above. It's more resistant to Burn this time, though still Flame-weak — Fire Arrows plus Higanbana: Seeds keep the pressure on.
Phase 2: berserk
At zero health it rises again, berserk: faster, more aggressive, and with a forward leap added to its attacks. Some non-damaging summoned trees now double as grapple points — use them, because mobility is how you dodge the chained sweeps. Your most reliable punish stays the same: bait the telegraphed stomp, then land a full combo while its head is planted.
Rewards: what you capture
| Encounter | Reported reward |
|---|---|
| First fight (Ogouchi crater) | Nushi Skill: Sakura Storm + Rangiferine Memories |
| Lair rematch | Blade Art: Sakura |
| Matsukawa Zone (Mountainous Region) | Sakura: Javelin — an electrified grapple-point skill for Koo — and the Sakura Finisher for Emma |
Source note: our two launch sources split these rewards slightly differently — GamesRadar credits the lair fight with the Sakura Javelin and Sakura Blade Art/Finisher, while Fextralife spreads them across three encounters as listed above. We'll settle the exact drop order after in-game verification.

FAQ
What is Rangifer's weakness?
Flame — Koo's Higanbana: Seeds stacks Burn on it, and Fire Arrows work in the rematch. Its sweeps are parryable, which feeds the stagger bar. The later Matsukawa encounter is reported Lightning-weak instead.
What do you get for beating Rangifer?
Sakura-line rewards across its encounters: Sakura Storm and Rangiferine Memories first, the Sakura Blade Art from the lair, and Sakura Javelin (Koo) plus the Sakura Finisher (Emma) in the Mountainous Region.
How many times do you fight Rangifer?
At least twice in the early game — the crater fight and the two-phase lair rematch — with a further Matsukawa Zone rematch reported later.
