The core loop: one person, one dog
Beast of Reincarnation's combat identity comes from controlling two fighters as one unit. You directly control Emma the Sealer — attacking, evading and parrying in real time — while Koo executes techniques you select from a command menu. Opening that menu slows the action, giving you time to read the field and choose a response.
Successful parries feed the resource used for Koo's techniques, so defense and partner commands form one loop rather than two separate systems. Game Freak describes the result as a fusion of real-time action and command-based RPG design.
Emma's toolkit
- Katana combat: real-time attacks, evasive movement and timed parries. Preview footage emphasizes reading enemy animations and turning a successful defense into an opening.
- Plant traversal: Emma's blight-linked hair can create routes across broken terrain and set up falling attacks. The changing forests are part of the world design, not a claim that players can summon an entire biome on command.
- Loadout flexibility: the game explicitly supports ranged, stealthy and aggressive playstyles through your choice of gear, skill trees and spirit stones — covered in depth in our builds guide.
The parry economy — how the two halves connect (official)
Director Kota Furushima detailed the core loop in Xbox's Developer_Direct: parrying enemy attacks with Emma earns points, and those points are what you spend to unleash Koo's abilities. Defense literally funds your dog's offense — whiff your parries and Koo goes quiet; play sharp and you cycle his skills constantly.
Two more confirmed details reshape how the game will feel: Koo's command menu can be opened at any time, and combat slows down while you pick a skill — deliberate breathing room the team built in so fights reward "the tactical mindset of a command-based RPG," not just reflexes.
Difficulty: three official modes
Confirmed by Game Freak: Normal, a "highly challenging" Hard, and Story Mode — in which parry timing is more forgiving and enemy damage is reduced. Full analysis of what that means for the souls-like question is on our dedicated page.
Koo's role: your commanded partner
Koo is the command layer of the battle system. You spend the points generated through Emma's actions on companion techniques, and the slowdown lets you select them without abandoning real-time combat. Official material confirms that Emma and Koo both grow through skill trees, gear and spirit stones; our Koo commands guide now covers the first useful commands and passive modifiers reported in launch-day testing.
Boss powers: capture and use
Emma and Koo's mission is to defeat Bosses from across the world and capture their powers. That makes each major boss both a combat test and a progression unlock. Named powers, numerical effects and optimal combinations stay out of this guide until they can be verified in the released game.
How hard is it?
Adjustable difficulty is confirmed in Steam's accessibility features. Director Kota Furushima has also described a Story Mode that reduces the action-skill barrier. Exact damage values, parry-window changes and whether difficulty affects rewards have not been officially detailed, so those remain unverified.
