| Location | Kanto — Ancient Civilization Zone (second main region), past a facility where you restore power to open a sealed gate |
|---|---|
| Boss level | Reported 13 (first encounter) · 16 (second encounter, a different location in the same zone) |
| Weakness | Lightning — a Lightning-infused sword and Lightning Bolts/Arrows; Koo's Frailty Fang is also reported to weaken it |
| Effective defense | Parry the Swimming Jump, Bite Attack and Tail Swipe. Mud Pool and Purple Glob are red attacks — dodge or run, don't parry |
| Rewards | Bloom Art: Dokuzeri: Fang (Koo) + Blade Art: Dokuzeri (Emma) — details below |
Before the fight: preparation
The two guides reviewed here recommend slightly different loadouts — neither contradicts the other, so both are worth knowing:
- Gear for Lightning. A Lightning-element sword (Fextralife names the Thunderwave Sword) plus the Thick Cuirass for defense, and Lightning Bolts/Arrows for your ranged weapon.
- Or lean on Koo's debuff. DualShockers recommends equipping Koo with Frailty Fang to weaken Lacerta directly, dealing more damage and taking less in return.
- Carry Recovery Tonic and Antidote on Koo. The Tonic periodically heals you through the fight; the Antidote cures the Poison status the boss applies once it turns aggressive.
- Optional Koo setup: Fextralife's build uses the Javelin skill with the End of the Line Modifier for burst damage on the shock/stagger window, Roots to lock the boss down and prevent its more dangerous attacks, and Higanbana Bloom for sustained healing.
- A Bind-capable Bloom Art (mod that can bind a target) is reported useful — binding Lacerta incapacitates it, giving you a free damage window.
The six attacks
DualShockers catalogued Lacerta's full moveset. Two attacks glow red — Beast of Reincarnation's usual signal across bosses (see Rangifer) that the attack cannot be parried and must be dodged or evaded instead.
| Attack | What it looks like | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Mud Pool (red) | Lacerta conjures a pool of mud around itself, glows red, then shoots spikes from the ground | Cannot be parried — run clear of the mud or perfect-dodge. Fextralife notes you can jump clear using Emma's hair traversal move |
| Swimming Jump | Dives into the ground, swims underneath the arena, then leaps up and lunges | Parryable — a good perfect-parry opportunity |
| Bite Attack | Opens its mouth and lunges three times, occasionally finished with a tail swipe | Perfect-parry each of the three bites individually (~1 second apart) |
| Purple Glob (red) | Creates distance, glows red, then fires purple projectiles | Cannot be parried — perfect-dodge each shot or sprint out of the line of fire |
| Tail Swipe | Turns to the side and swipes with its tail | Parryable |
| Minions | Summons adds to distract you, then follows with a red-glow leap attack | Dodge the red attack first, then kill the minions quickly before they stack up damage |
The reward for good parries: DualShockers notes a large stagger window opens right after Lacerta's close-range attacks (bites, tail swipe) — activating Entanglement Overdrive immediately after one of these lengthens the punish window further, and is the reported window to land Nushi Skills like Sakura Storm or Dokuzeri Shower plus Koo's abilities.
Where and when you fight it
Lacerta is a main-story encounter in the Ancient Civilization Zone, the game's second region, so it can't be missed by following the critical path. Progressing through the zone leads to a facility where restoring power opens a sealed gate; continuing to the main waypoint from there leads directly into the first fight.
You then fight Lacerta a second time at a different location within the same zone — Fextralife reports the first encounter around level 13 and the second around level 16. The game's main quest waypoints point the way to the second fight, so there's no need to hunt for it.
The harder phase
DualShockers reports that Lacerta eventually shifts into a more aggressive phase: it glows red and its attacks deal more damage, and it starts applying Poison on hit — the moveset itself stays the same six attacks, so the priority is reacting faster and keeping an Antidote ready. Fextralife's guide separately notes that once you're past the opening exchanges, switching to ranged Lightning ammo at a safe distance is an effective way to keep pressure on without eating an unnecessary hit. Whenever Lacerta swims away or otherwise creates distance, that's your cue to swap to bow or crossbow — both sources agree ranged damage against it is worthwhile, not just a chip-damage filler.
Rewards: what you capture
Fextralife and DualShockers agree on the reward for defeating Lacerta — neither source splits it across the two encounters the way early Rangifer reports did:
- Bloom Art: Dokuzeri: Fang (Koo)
- Blade Art: Dokuzeri (Emma)
- Access to the game's third zone
DualShockers specifically calls these two rewards "considered the strongest in the game up to this point of the playthrough" and recommends putting them to use right away. See how they fit into a loadout on the builds guide.
