Why the "handheld optimized" badge matters
Microsoft's handheld badge isn't decorative — it indicates the game ships with a settings profile suitable for handheld hardware (ROG Ally-class APUs). For a UE5 action RPG, that's the single strongest pre-launch signal that a Steam Deck experience may also be viable: Deck hardware sits below Ally on raw power, but a game tuned for handheld thermals and 720–800p targets is far more likely to scale down gracefully.
The two open questions for Deck
- SteamOS / Proton compatibility. The official listing supports Windows 10/11, but it still has no Steam Deck rating. A Windows requirement alone does not rule out Proton; only an actual compatibility test can settle launch, video-codec and controller behavior.
- Performance floor. The official minimum targets low-quality 1080p at 40 fps with performance-mode upscaling on a GTX 1070 or RX 580. Steam Deck is materially below those desktop GPUs, so a stable result may require a lower resolution and 30 fps cap — if it runs cleanly at all.
What we're tracking from launch (community-sourced)
- Does the Steam build boot and run on Deck (LCD and OLED) via Proton? First credible player/creator reports get cited here.
- Playable settings people land on: 30fps/40fps profiles, FSR settings, and battery drain per hour.
- Controller glyphs, text legibility, and suspend/resume behavior.
- ROG Ally via the Xbox app (Game Pass version) as the officially-supported comparison point — note the active "rog xbox ally playable?" thread in Steam discussions pre-launch.
